About edge recording
Edge recording is the process of recording and storing recorded videos on the peripheral device, thus removing the need for a centralized recording server or unit. With edge recording, you can store video directly on the camera’s internal storage device (SD card) or on a network attached storage volume (NAS volume).
How it works
A video surveillance system that uses a physical or cloud-based server to record video requires extensive bandwidth. Whether video is recorded continuously or only when motion is detected, video is streamed from each video unit to the server continuously.
- You add a video unit that supports edge recording
- You choose the Camera continuous recording type
- You choose the NAS continuous recording type
A 64GB SD card can typically store more than a month of video.
Benefits of edge recording
- Requires less network bandwidth and reduces network congestion.
With the Camera continuous recording type extensive bandwidth is not required. The network is only used for streaming live and playback video, and exporting video, not for storing video recordings.
- Decreases the risk of missing video recordings.
If the Stratocast™ cloud is offline, edge recording is unaffected and recording continues on the video unit (SD card) or NAS volume.
Limitations
Accessing playback video that is stored on the video unit or network attached storage (NAS) is slower than accessing video that is stored in the Stratocast™ cloud.
